My Kickstarter Campaign: The Unemployment Cookbook, Second Edition

It’s here. It’s ready. And it’s live. After many months of planning and a few recent late nights of editing, the time is finally right to jump in the deep end.

The Unemployment Cookbook commercial is now available for viewing:

I have faith in my cookbook. I believe it’s pertinent and timely and fulfilling… in more ways than one. And even if my campaign fails, this experience is a huge success.

I learned how to create a video from start to finish.
I carefully chose rewards that reflect investors’ interest level.
I did all this while working a full time day job, and still managed to put food on the table and keep a clean house.

Yeah. Things are looking up. And I couldn’t be happier.

Happy Eating!

Kickstarting the Kickstarter Campaign

I finally did it. I made the video for my Kickstarter campaign to fund the Second Edition of The Unemployment Cookbook. I was hoping to have the link here for your perusal, but Kickstarter needs to review and authenticate my video. I understand. I’d hate for someone to think they’re watching a short video about a cookbook only to find I’d accidentally uploaded the 12 Cats of Christmas.

It’s not an Oscar-winning video. It’s not meant to be. It’s meant to be low-budget. Simple. But substantial. Just like the Cookbook itself.

The fundraising will start in a few days. But the video… the video is magic. This shadow of a thing on my To-Do List, this nagging tug that’s been there for months is finally crossed off. Satisfactorily.

I felt the lightbulb above my head illuminate as I realized I’d been thinking too much. I didn’t think I could do it justice. I was trying too hard. A simple Cookbook deserves a simple project. I’d been thoughtful of how to really sell the Cookbook. I had a brilliant marketing plan conceived and waiting to be acted upon. I had reviews. Soundbites. Aroma-Vision. At least, that’s what I wanted.

But I don’t have those. And I don’t need to. It sells itself. I just need to get the word out.

And now that I have, I can get back to the business of writing.

Featured Recipe: Texas Hash

“Sometimes it’s hard to make ends meet. Food shouldn’t be a sacrifice.” ~from The Unemployment Cookbook.

It’s been so long since I’ve posted a recipe on the blog, I thought this one would be a great treat.

Texas Hash is a family favorite. It’s quick, easy, and inexpensive to make, and delicious to eat. At our house, we often serve it with a salad and garlic toast.

It feeds my family, and guests, with leftovers to spare.

So with all that going for it, there was no question about including it in The Unemployment Cookbook.

Texas Hash

Rating: 51

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 35 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

This family favorite heritage dish pretty much stands on its own. The flavors blend well, but still offer a base which can easily be changed up to suit individual tastes.

Ingredients

  • Medium onion, diced
  • green pepper, diced
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 12 oz. diced tomatoes (do not drain)
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1-1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp celery salt
  • 3/4 cup uncooked rice (not instant)

Instructions

  1. Lightly coat frying pan with cooking oil.
  2. Fry onion and green pepper until tender (approximately 2 - 3 minutes).
  3. Add ground beef.
  4. Cook until browned.
  5. Add tomatoes, chili powder, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and celery salt.
  6. Mix well.
  7. Bring to a boil.
  8. Stir in rice.
  9. Reduce to a simmer.
  10. Cook approximately 30 -35 minutes.
  11. Serve.

The Unemployment Cookbook Giveaway: New Rules!

After a lack of response [read: not enough “likes” and “followers”] I cancelled the Cookbook giveaway.

Well, that caused a slight commotion for those of you who do follow and like.

So. Here I am. Apologizing for the shake-up. And offering you three ~ yes, three ~ chances to win your own autographed copy of The Unemployment Cookbook.

Previously, the rules stated that once I reached a certain amount of likes/followers, I’d use Random.org to pick the lucky winners. Unfortunately, I’m nowhere near the likes/follows that I’d wanted.

So I’m changing the rules accordingly:

1. The giveaway will end at 11:59 p.m. PST on Saturday, April 14, 2012.
2. There will be three separate drawings: One (1) for the followers of Frankly My Dear … (the blog); One (1) for the followers of Molly Jo on Facebook; and One (1) for the followers of New Inklings Press on Facebook.
3. No substitutions or transfers will be allowed.
4. This giveaway is open legal residents of the United States only, age 18 and older. [So sorry, Canada! Your rules state I’d have to have a skills test in order for you to enter. I’ll work on that for the next giveaway!]
5. At the end of the giveaway period, I will use Random.org to select the winners from all eligible entries. If you follow all three links at the time of the giveaway, that’s three chances you have of winning!

I think that about covers it. Good luck to everyone!
