Ethan and the California Wave

When you think of California and Waves, I’m pretty sure the last thing that comes to mind is ice. But when Un-Son Number One gets his skates on, that’s all that matters.

Ethan on Ice

You’ve often read about our Second Family. We do so much together. But there are some differences. I can’t get them to watch the Yankees unless there’s a bet, and they’re still working on over three years of teaching us about hockey.

I discovered something yesterday: if they had tried to teach me while at a live game, I would have learned much quicker. The tiny puck on a TV screen does not do justice to the Game.

Ethan plays Winger for the California Wave, an amateur hockey league that practices and holds their home games at the Center Ice Arena in Ontario, CA. And yesterday, this proud Un-Mom got to watch him play!

I would love to tell you terms and plays. The truth is, I still know very little. I know a hat-trick means one player scores three times in the same game. And if the puck enters the net past the Goalie, even if it rebounds it’s still a goal.

The amateur league games are free to watch, which also makes it an even better family affair. Since warm air rises, we sat on the upper level and looked down on the ice. Julie, Jeff and Elisa had to suffer in the score box. Their bodies will chilled but the teams were hot!

Hockey is a very fast-paced game, and the score was 1-3 before I glimpsed the first goal. The action doesn’t just stay with the puck. There are players crashing each other into walls, the whoosh of skates slicing up clouds of icy dust, and burly tumbles all in pursuit of that little black disc.

It’s exciting, challenging, and over way too fast. Even though the Wave played well, The OC Hockey Club took the game at 5-7. A minor disappointment for such a great team.

I’m glad there’s another home game in two weeks.

In the meantime, I think I’ll do some light reading.

Closet Explosions and Disappearing Cookbooks

Well, here I am again; 9 o’clock at night and just now remembering I don’t have a post for tomorrow.

I’m disappointed in the (lack of) quality writing on my blog lately. I have grand ideas, terrific ideas; but I also have a pretty full schedule. This week has been all about book signings, meet-and-greets and selling The Unemployment Cookbook. Oh, there’s still for you to enter to win your own free copy. Just click here.

Today I devoted the afternoon to spring cleaning my Master Bedroom Closet. But as we all know, to clean a mess you have to make a mess. And that means that two hours before bedtime my room looked like the closet had expelled itself a solid case of the stomach flu all over the place. Clothing, bags, papers, empty plastic bins, full plastic bins, stuff that fell out of plastic bins… did I mention it was messy?

I stopped to take a dinner break, and nearly fell asleep in my chair. So after much self-convincing, I picked up the trash, stacked the magazines, hung the clothes, and put the few remnant tasks into the Narnia room… and closed the door. At least I can look around my room tonight and not see a mess. It will still be there tomorrow, but at least tonight I don’t have to look at it. That makes me feel a little better.

I’m actually not too sure that life won’t drag me away from the closet again tomorrow (your today, since I’m writing this Thursday night). I have the usual morning schedule: drive Dot to school (or let her drive me), stop at Mom’s for the morning news and coffee, get to the grocery store for a few essentials (if I remember. The last three days I’ve forgotten).

In the afternoon, I get an exciting change from the norm: I get to drive down to County offices for job skills testing. Last month I applied for a clerical position in the local offices, and my resume and application passed Step One. Now I get to go with a group of about 200 others to be tested for skills. I’m not nervous about the test, I love tests. I really do. I love “showing off” I guess. Especially word and communication skills. Go figure. No, not worried about the test at all.

It’s the weather. This morning the reports were calling for severe rainstorms and high winds throughout the area, and I refuse to make the drive in those conditions. But as of 9 o’clock tonight, there’s much less rain in the forecast and even the wind predictions are dying down. So I’m confident that I’ll make the drive, ace the test, and land the job.

Tomorrow night will be my favorite part of the day. It’s Family Game Night at the Second Family’s house after Bible Study. We haven’t gotten our two families together for a few months, so we’re all looking forward to this much needed quality time. Of course, the hockey play-offs will feature prominently in our viewing activity, at least for a while.

Yeeks. I just realized I’ll have to write tomorrow’s post early so I don’t forget. Well? What should I write about? You decide.

Lessons Learned (October 4, 2011)

by Molly Jo Realy @MollyJoRealy

1. It’s okay if the Yankees don’t win now and then.

2. The Yankees are, by far, the greatest team in Baseball.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still a great movie.

4. There are “friends” who use you and manipulate you, friends who need you more than you need them, friends who know what you need, and Friends who take care of you.

5. I try to be a Friend to my friends; but I know I sometimes fail.

6. Income is not the same as a job; and work is not the same as a career.

7. God is bigger than the Boogie Man (Veggie Tales!), and He’s bigger than anything I can think of.

8. The world is incredibly old; there is no original idea left. What was once science fiction is history. What is the future was once someone’s dream. What is now is now. All I have that’s unique is perspective.

9. God will give me the desires of my heart… as long as I delight in Him (Psalm 37:4).

10. I like double-speak for creative writing. I hate it in politicians.

11. Life is not hopeless.

12. Everything is temporary.

13. The colder the weather, the snugglier the cat.

14. October changes people.

15. It’s easier to heal with good foods than bad medicine.

16. Dental work doesn’t always hurt.

17. Complacency is brain-atrophy ~ never a good thing.

18. Biographies can be fun.

19. Forgiveness is important. Guidance is important. Understanding and compassion are important. Love is most important.

20. Flashpoint is still the best show on TV, no matter what network it’s on.

21. Flashpoint peeps are still the best no matter how we connect.

22. Facebook and twitter secretly hate each other.

23. Hockey is not boring, but is sure is hard to follow!

24. Bunco is worth it. No matter what.

25. Christmas is one day. The Christmas spirit should be eternal. Commercialism should be killed.

26. My mom and dad did know more than me when I was a teen. I should have listened more.

27. Someday I’m going to be a famous writer… preferably while I’m young enough to enjoy spoiling my family and securing their futures.

28. God loves me. No matter what. No. Matter. What.
