iPhone v. Droid: An unsponsored MoJo review

My daughter has an iPhone 4S. She bought it with money she received for her high school graduation. I, having not graduated recently, still have my two-year-old Android.

In the past two months, I have grown convinced that an iPhone is the phone for me. And this is my official notice that it is now tops on my Christmas List this year. (Or, Hallowe’en treat. Or back-to-school special. Or just “I’m thinking of you NOW” gift, if whoever-you-are is feeling prematurely presentatious.)

The differences between my Droid and Dot’s 4S, in no particular technical order, are:

  • My battery no longer holds a decent charge. It stays plugged in to the wall 3 times more often than not. Even after being replaced six weeks ago. Dot’s battery has lasted her through four days of camping. Granted, she turned it off, often. But I know dollars-to-donuts my Droid wouldn’t have turned back on after Day 2.
  • Her iPhone camera is far, far better than mine. I’d rather not demonstrate. It’s depressing.
  • My Droid freezes up often when texting, or opens random applications (Calendar or ColorNotes, for example). Dot’s applications work when, and only when, she wants them to.
  • My Droid overheats. Often. Regularly. Her iPhone never does. Never.
  • Where Dot has chosen some amazing games and applications, I worry about adding anything new to my Droid.
  • Her screen is bigger than mine.
  • Hers is white. Mine is the basic black/steel looking frame.
  • The iPhone has iTunes.
  • The iPhone has Siri.
  • Since we are an Apple/Mac family, the iPhone would work better with my laptop.
  • Since we are an Apple/Mac family, if I had problems with the iPhone, my brother (whom I affectionately refer to as my unofficial business manager and techie guru) can resolve any such issue. Notsomuch with my Droid.
  • Instagram. Need I say more?
  • Because I do so much internet/social media work, it’s essential for me to have a dependable hand computer smart phone.

I asked friends if they preferred iPhones over Droids or other cell phones, and the overwhelming response was

“DUH.”

Which leaves me with this one last reason to save for an iPhone:

  • Because I want one. Period.

My dear friend Lisa thinks Apple should offer me an iPhone for a product review. I agree. But that’s just me.

Are you listening, Apple? Hello? Just a bite? Please?

I Couldn’t Sleep Last Night

I couldn’t sleep last night.

I was excited for this morning’s Safe and Sassy Party.
I’m waiting for Dot to return home from her camping trip.
It’s too hot.
The house still smells fresh and I want to enjoy it.
I watched an action movie just before turning in.
I’m mentally working on five writing projects including the Blog.

But mostly, I couldn’t sleep last night

Because when I stepped into my room,

This is what I saw:

I’m changing the name of my home to CATford Manor.

In The Midst of the Heat Wave

Waiting for Rain

In the midst of this heatwave,
My cats are drinking ice water
And I’m keeping all windows and blinds closed.

It makes it darker. It makes it cozier.
And it makes it almost okay to listen to
What I call “Autumn” music:

Those tunes by Diana Krall and Harry Connick, Jr.
That bring to mind Autumn in New York
Crisp leaves, caramel apples, and Central Park.

In the midst of this heatwave,
Dot is far away
Camping in the Sierras

And sending daily reports
of amazing photos and adventures
That don’t involve heat stroke.

In the midst of this heatwave,
The house is still getting clean
and organized

But not as fast as I’d like.

I’m watching more television
than usual
and I’m now caught up
on the junk they call “news”.

My checkbook is balanced
but the paperwork is scattered

And I think I’ll get more done

at midnight

when it finally cools down
to a balmy 85 degrees

But that is finally when
the cats and I

decide

to fall asleep

And dream
of cooler days.

First Morning

I Had a Job Interview Today!

Yup. I had an interview. A real, in-person, we-think-you-could-benefit-our-business job interview today. [I also had a call to join an insurance team about an hour’s drive from home and work for commission only… had to turn that one down. Darn.]

I had been referred to today’s Real Interviewer through mutual contacts. A year ago, I wouldn’t have considered it: part-time. Small office.

And today, it felt like a perfect fit. Because it’s a nice atmosphere. Because they’ve been in business for over a decade and are still growing. Because any job is better than no job. Because a pay check is still a paycheck. And because every little bit helps.

Whether or not I get the job, I’m glad I went to the interview, which was more of an informal get-to-know-you meeting. Mostly because I don’t get out much these days. Also because it was nice to see new faces. I love meeting people!

The office manager was encouraging. She was excited about the marketing/advertising background I naturally come by on my resume, through my blog and just because I’m a naturally chatty person (go figure!).

But the absolute best moment of this meeting was when she said, “I heard you’re a great writer and want to make sure this job wouldn’t get in the way of those goals.”

Uhm…. NO. I will gladly work for you part time until it turns into full time, and in the meantime I will continue to write and blog and write and cook and write and review and write. You’ll just be helping to pay the bills until the write check comes along.

But thanks for asking.
