Hey. It happens.

So, the funny thing is, I teach people to find what their brand is and stick with it.

  • What do people appreciate the most about you?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are you most comfortable doing/teaching/sharing?
  • What makes you happy?

And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like … Oh, wait. Sorry. Sinatra in my head. [Note to self: Take the fedora off the shelf.] Ahem. What I was saying was, I sort of took my own advice … and tossed it aside. But like a well-tossed neon pink frisbee, it came right back at me. {Don’t, okay? I know you know I meant boomerang. But frisbee just sounded better. So just … keep reading. Thanks.}

Was it really just last summer I did a renovative rebrand? Why, yes. Yes, I think it was. Who can forget my Wizard of Oz poppies populating the background for my new parent website?

And how easily the storefront came together, and then, voila! The blog redesign. I can’t really tell ya which is my favorite. I heart them all. Like, a lot.

Not-so-secret sidenote: This Girl, who was never terribly feminine, is enjoying the sights and smells of flowers, perfume, and all things girly. What the heck?! I mean, true story: Even my journals and Happy Planners are, well, pretty.

But somewhere in the midst of being real, selling books, and claiming my Southern Belle-ness, I realized there was something more. Something deep inside that tied everything together even though it seemed like a chaotic mess.

You all know what it is. At least, you know part of it. Hurricane. My word for the year. Hey, it adopted me, okay?

But that’s why it’s taken me two weeks to follow up with another post. Because I couldn’t put my finger on the first part. I mean, yah. Happy chaos seems to really be my thing. But what does that even mean?

So there I am at lunch with my local bestie, Beckie Lindsey, celebrating the contract for her first book, scarfing pizza, and talking media and marketing and branding and we throw some ideas around and BAM. She’s branded. Like, in a good way. Beckie Lindsey: God in real life … Also, coffee. Yup. That’s her!

Meanwhile, my other media sounding board, Aaron ~ you may know him from his Firsts in Fiction podcast, wink wink. You know. The one This Girl produces every other week ~ he left the lunch. So I text him and say, “Hey, Faux Bro. What’s my branding and recognition?” You know what they both say? Him and Becks? Branding and Recognition. Ooh, big help, guys. Big. Help. not.

And then it hit me like, well, like a hurricane. [Oh, c’mon. You knew I was gonna do that!] I’m reaching for that last mushroom on the plate and trying not to get my sleeves or bangles into the pizza sauce. It was almost an epic fail until my fancy flail saved the day (and the sleeve!). And without realizing that style is a part of my brand, I became the Bohemian Hurricane.

And all her people gasped in acknowledgment.

Yah, that’s right. Go ahead and chuckle. Nod. Do your “Mm-hmm, that’s her!” thing just like they did. ‘Cause This Girl is embracing her wilderness, her free spirit, her loud voice.

And This Girl is going places this year.

Because hurricanes rarely sit still.

Or have perfectly coiffed hair.

Yup. That’s a thing I’m working on. It was going to be a blog post. Then it evolved into a presentation. It’s been translated into workshops and now it’s growing up into it’s very own book. I’m so proud of my antisocial baby!

Ah, but back to the task at hand. Working for Aaron has its perks. Like pizza. Did I mention the pizza?

So here’s how it all ties in together. I’m earning my way back to next year’s BRMCWC and more Biltmore pizza on my plate. See what I did there? Yeah, Naomi and Aaron are always mentioning how much I have on my plate, and how a great portion of it is his social media. But if it gets me more pizza, I’m so ready for more plates. Fine bone china, blue pattern, if you please.

I’ll take on as many plates as I can manage, if it means I’m being well fed. And let’s face it: Being well fed includes food for the body, the soul, and the creative part as well, yes?

So let me introduce you to Aaron’s Firsts in Fiction weekly podcast. Every Tuesday at 6:30 PM PST, we gather ’round the computer monitor and tell tales. Okay, sort of. We do meet at 6:30. Aaron and his dad, Al Gansky, interview guests on a live video feed while I facilitate the chat room. We cover all fiction-related topics from writing to editing to promoting to contests to favorite endings to overcoming writer’s block to . . . you get the picture.

I’m sort of a chatty cathy and I guess they picked up on that, because last month they made me official PRODUCER of the podcast. So not much has changed in what I do, just how I do it. Now I’m privy to early behind-the-scenes discussions. I get to video-meet our guests and do my ninja magic on air.

If you’ve seen the podcast recently (and by recently, I mean the last three weeks), you’ve also seen me looking at my phone a lot. No, I’m not bored. I’m tweeting. Sharing. Linking. Liking. Getting whatever visibility I can for the #podcast.

And then it dawned on me. DUH. I did. I literally said, “DUH.” To no one but the cats, but that’s another story and I’m sure Lizzie Cat will tell you all about when her computer privileges are restored. So anyway, I said DUH and figured, why not let my own peeps in on the fun?

Too Hot to Cook (June’s Meal Plan)

It’s been a few months since I’ve written a Meal Plan post. Based on the success of my recent monthly WinCo trips, I’ve had enough foods in the freezer and pantry to not have to buy too much. So I’ve been winging it; making what I can find. Occasionally, I’ve put together some meals like this hearty chicken and pasta dinner.

I always keep frozen salmon filets in the freezer. Last month, I bought a 5 lb. bag of chicken breasts (admittedly not from WinCo). Sure, it cost nearly $17, but with 20 breasts, that’s less than $1/piece.

So my Plan for June is to eat more chicken. I don’t have an entire month of menus planned out. But I have my Aroma Rice Cooker. And I have a plan.

Again with the savings I find at WinCo, I’ll supplement what I already have and make some wonderful meals. My goal is to make some scrumptious dishes without having to cook too much in the summer heat. Some of the meals I’ll make more than once because they’re easy and delicious.

Not only do I want to save money, I want to eat better. My eczema has been rapidly improving as I now have prescription-strength ointment and have been eating less fast foods which, I’ve discovered, can significantly induce a flare up. So, for the health of my body and my wallet, June will be a Home-Cooked Meal Month.

Here’s my tentative meal plan (each meal is followed by how many days we can eat from one preparation by how many times I’ll make it for a total amount of dinner days):

  • Chicken and Pasta (as pictured above), 2 x 2 = 4
  • Steamed Chicken and Rice, 1 x 4 = 4
  • Slow Cooker Chicken & Kraut, 3 x 2 = 6
  • Steamed Salmon and Rice, 1 x 4 = 4
  • Spaghetti with sauce and garlic toast, 2 x 2 = 4
  • Baked Frittata (usually a weekend meal for brunch as well), 2 x 2 = 4

That leaves four days with no menu plan. We like to keep a few “open” days on the calendar. We’ll eat at least twice at my Mom’s house, or order a pizza on Pay Day, or just not feel like eating. I know, pizza. But it’s not regular fast food. And if I only eat it once a month, I should be okay…

With this great plan, I already have the main components. My grocery list is just the sauerkraut, cream of chicken soups, and frittata ingredients. I’ll include a cheap dessert like Jell-O and Cool Whip, pudding, or a few of Dot’s favorite cookies. We always keep ice cream in the freezer; especially in the summer.

It’s my goal to spend less than $100 this month, including the cat food, litter, and household needs. At a regular grocery store this would be nearly impossible. But, as I so often like to say, “WinCo Wins!”

*Cheater Meal: We did treat ourselves to Red Robin yesterday since I won a gift card from work.

My February Meal Plan

On the heels of a somewhat-successful January Meal Plan, I’m keeping with the motion and starting to plot out my Meal Plan for next month.

This one will be different. I don’t have a $100 gift card to shop at WinCo. But because I was unable to keep to January’s plan in its entirety, I still have plenty of food in my pantry and freezer.

*Here’s where I give a HUGE shout-out to my Mom who’s let us eat much of her food because, well, we’re pretty much living with her until the new furnace unit is installed. And let’s face it… I’m not keen on staying in a cold house even with the cat wrapped around my head at night.

For starters, I have a list of meals to make, but I’m not putting them on a schedule. Considering the difficulties in the last two weeks, it’s easier sometimes to have a selection available without an actual Plan.

With that in mind, my February Meals planned consist, so far, of the following:

  • Texas Hash, 4 days

That takes care of half the month.

I always keep frozen chicken and salmon filets. I have three favorite ways cooking each of these: citrus baked, breaded, and blackened. That’s six different meals right there, and if only half offer leftovers, that’s three more meals.

There’s a happy chance we’ll be eating at Mom’s at least twice a week. Okay, more than a chance. We get together even if it’s just for toast and peanut butter. So there’s that.

There’s still plenty for lunches and breakfasts, too. The only foods I should have to buy in February are milk, eggs, and cat food for the fur-family. Which, if you ask me, is a really great savings!

January Meal Plan Recap and Setbacks: Week 2

Where do I start? January’s almost half over. WHAT?! Am I the only one doing a head-turn at that statement? I hope not!

The last week had its Ups and Downs. I would expect nothing less, as life is proving itself more and more to be a teeter-totter. But I’m having a lot of fun learning how to balance each valley and peak. Just because there’s highs and lows doesn’t mean one has to be exclusively good or bad. There’s a little bit of everything everywhere. And each day, life is becoming more fascinating to me as I learn what makes it tick.

I narrowly escaped a wrong-way driver who came within inches of a head-on collision with not only myself, but the car next to me. It was a not-so-subtle reminder that all things are fleeting.

It was my first full week of work since before the holidays. And cold! Winter decided to stay around for longer than just a few hours. Thursday brought a day of inconsistent snowfall, and Friday left with a stunning winter sky.

I’ve been able to share my Meal Plan with many readers, and that excites me. Not just because of what it means to me as a Writer, but also because the feedback has been so encouraging. Whether its emails through Kickstarter or Blog comments or Facebook notifications… I can’t begin to express my gratitude for all your support and encouragement.

And now, this week’s Recap:

On January 6, Slow Cooker Turkey Chili was on the menu. But as you know from last week’s Recap, I made the Baked Frittata instead.

On January 7 & 8, there was still leftover pizza and frittata in the fridge. Dot spent Tuesday out and about, and had dinner elsewhere.

Rather than make the Slow Cooker Turkey Chili later in the week than planned, I froze the meat and prepared to move on to the next dish on calendar.

Here’s where I confess to cheating on my Meal Plan: on Wednesday I treated myself to breakfast from McDonald’s.

I’d been exhausted from the holidays, and feeling run down. As much as I praise my Meal Plan and frugal budgeting, my body was asking for this food. You know those moments before you get sick when you crave certain flavors? This was it. I indulged with $5.38 and treated myself to a warm breakfast. It got me through the day and when I came home, I made Potato Chip Casserole.

This is another family favorite. While Dot crushed the bag of chips, I mixed the soups and milk. Half an hour later, we were enjoying this salty, crunchy, meaty hot dish while talking about our day with each other.

It’s so fun to cook together and eat together. I love these times with my daughter. I absolutely love them and I absolutely love her!

On Thursday, we ate dinner at Mutti’s again as my cousin Betty came to visit with two of her friends. They’re from Wisconsin, and driving around the country. This delightful trio regaled us with their travel stories and photographs. Mom made the delicious Texas Hash, and her guests were delighted enough with the recipe to buy the last copies of the first edition of my Cookbook! (Thank you, Betty, Pat and Marge!)

Dot went out with friends on Friday, leaving me to scrounge for a few snacks as I wasn’t hungry enough for a full meal.

On Saturday, I attended a Writer’s Club meeting with Amy (the aforementioned reporter), then met Dot at Mom’s to watch the Green Bay Packers… let’s not talk about that any more, shall we? Thanks. We helped Mom clean up her leftovers and didn’t get home until nearly 9 o’clock.

That means I’m nearly a week behind on my cooking, but a week ahead on the Plan. What I didn’t make last week, I’ll make this week, and next.

For the remainder of this month, I have everything I need except milk. We’ll have more Ratatouille, Veggie Pizza, Potato Chip Casserole, Texas Hash, and the Slow Cooker Turkey Chili.
