Five Things Friday: My Favorite Cookbooks

Frankly, My Dear . . . : My Favorite Cookbooks

Pretend this is real paper and you’re reading my scribble: As I’m prepping this blog post, my Mississippi Bestie Cara Pearson called and gushed about the great cookbooks she picked up at a used bookstore for about five cents each. And then she has the nerve to ask if I’ve ever seen the movie Julie & Julia. Please, girl. You know that’s what started me on my blog journey. Now I love her and all, but that’s just rubbing it in, dontcha think? Rub. Dry rub. That’s right! We’re talking about cookbooks today. Grab your go-juice and read on:

Hey, y’all. I’m so excited to be planning a big shopping trip to WinCo. Just another joy I have when cooking, baking, and blogging. But dangnabbit, it always makes me hungry! (Note to self: Eat before shopping. And bring your coffee tumbler.)

This trip will be a dash different than the norm. I’m starting a new job career [insert happy dance here, y’all!] next week and since I don’t know what the break room or lunch schedule is like yet, and because it’s just plain high time I did so, I’m changing up my dietary habits to include more health-friendly grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches, along with prep-easy, autumn-friendly dinners, and of course, snackage. I’m gonna learn and relearn great protein smoothies, bento lunches, and one-pot dinners.

Mmm. I can hardly wait: I’m also gonna try my hand at a red lentil soup, reminiscent of my trip to Seattle and lunch at Mamnoon’s.

Oh, sorry. I drifted into food memories for a moment. What were we talking about? Ah, yes. Food. Glorious food.

Y’all are familiar with my Stock That PDF List, yes? Of course that’s coming to the store with me. Now, like oh-so-many people I don’t have an endless budget when it comes to food buying. That’s one of the reasons I love WinCo. I can take my food allowance and make it stretch. And this time, I’m allowing myself a tiny (and by tiny I mean one meal’s worth) of funds for food experimenting. I want to develop my palate, y’all! But how can I do that if I keep buying the same foods?

So, in search of some new flavors, I looked at my cookbook shelf and, well, you guessed it. Say hello to this week’s #FiveThingsFriday.

  1. The Unemployment Cookbook.
Frankly, My Dear . . . : The Unemployment Cookbook

Frankly, My Dear . . . : The Unemployment Cookbook

Like sweet tea, this is a given, so let’s just get it out of the way. A labor of love and hard work, I created and/or compiled these family favorite recipes when Dot was in grade school. She wanted to have friends over, and I didn’t want to say she couldn’t, so I had to come up with some recipes that were affordable and delicious. And get this: Her friends’ parents were asking me for the recipes. Me! I couldn’t believe it. I had something to offer society after all. Naturally, I ran with it and the Cookbook idea was born. My Slow Cooker Pork & ‘Kraut recipe was the start of it all, and it’s been so long since I’ve made it. Thanks. Y’all just helped me decide what’s on my plate next week! [Feel free to click on the photo above to order your copy.]

  2. My Happy Planner Recipe Book and Meal Planner.

Don’t get your fireflies in a trap, this definitely counts as a cookbook. Like my Unemployment Cookbook, my Recipe/Meal Planner holds great hand-crafted recipes, cooking tips, meal plans, and coordinating grocery lists. Thanks, Hobbes, for the meatloaf inspiration. Plus, it’s like scrapbooking! Stickers, colored pens, washi tape. How could this amazing tool not be in my top five?

  3. Jessica Seinfeld’s Deceptively Delicious.
Frankly, My Dear . . . : Deceptively Delicious Cookbook

I picked this up on the discount shelf of a local book store when I moved into Bedford Manor. Folks, can I just say, ain’t no way this book is geared just to kids! With some amazing recipes and helpful hints (like how to equip your kitchen and making coffee cake with butternut squash), this is a great do-to idea guide when you’re not sure what to do with what’s in your pantry or fridge.

  4. KitchenAid Recipe Collection.

Who can forget the day I ordered my beautiful Isabella? [Oh, please. Like you don’t name your inanimate objects. So just, shush, my brother.] The special collection included a few attachments, the warranty, and this beauty. Chock full of cooking tips, detailed recipes and coordinating photographs, I recommend this book like I recommend blackened seasonings. It’s that good, girlfriend!

  5. Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook.
Frankly, My Dear . . . : Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook

I think everyone has some version of this cookbook on their shelf. That familiar pattern, the familiar title. It’s comfort cooking at its best. This was the first cookbook that was my own, a gift from my Momma (hi, Momma! Thank you!) when I moved into my first apartment. My first recipe used? The sugar cookies cut-outs (Page 200, if you have your own cookbook).

I don’t know ’bout all of you, but I’m ready for some home cooking and baking.

Five Things Friday: Frankly, Favorites

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

We’ve been doing the Five Things Friday posts for a while now. A start, a stop, a hiccup, but now we’re steady at it. I’ve enjoyed your topic suggestions and comments on these posts.

Recently, someone asked what my five favorite posts on FMD are. Y’all are smart. You already know where this is going. Of course, I could list twenty or possibly a hundred. So choosing my five favorite posts is a bit of a challenge. thankyouverymuchforthesuggestionyouknowwhoyouare.

And I’m betting once I hit “publish” I’m going to think up five other posts that could do justice. Or ten. Or twenty. Or, oh, heck. Just read them all.

But for now, here’s what comes to mind whenever I fondly think of Frankly, My Dear . . . I hope you’ll click through to find why these mean so much to me.

  1. Life Lessons from Willy Wonka

Of course, y’all know I couldn’t choose just five. Right? I mean, there were hundreds of posts for me to choose. And can I just say narrowing it down was like the first time I baked those biscuits from Lindsay Reine’s Cookbook. #epicfailure

Having said that, I give you the Honorable Mention:

Five Things Friday: Managing Credit

by Molly Jo Realy @RealMojo68

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

Money’s a touchy subject, right? As in,

DON’T TOUCH MY MONEY!

You work hard for it, only to have five cents left three seconds after you get paid.

Now, I know I’ve given y’all a few tips for saving a little here and there, but it’s been a while since I’ve taken you down my road to credit recovery. What is it about soul-baring posts that brings us closer together? Is is the security of knowing we’re not alone? That others are in the same boat? Yes. At least, for me.

It happened when I heard another ad on the radio. You know the ones I’m talking about. Refinance your house. Get this low-interest credit card. Let us consolidate your loans. The one that really got my attention was for a payday loan. I was seriously considering it until I did the math. I don’t mean the three-figure interest rate. I mean, how many people like me were listening to that ad at that moment?

Is there anyone out there?

Is there anyone out there?

Let me again remind you: I am not a finance professional. I hold no advisory license, and the information in this post is only what has worked for me, and what I would share with a close friend over a cup of coffee. My treat, of course.

So when the wolves are howling and you’re sleeping in quicksand, here are few things I’ve learned that have helped oooch things out of the red.

  1. Accept the reality. Believe it or not, this was the really hard one for me. I wanted to think I wasn’t a statistic, that my situation was so unique that as soon as everyone heard, surely Robin Hood would come to my rescue and my bankbook would be saved without ransom. Yeah. That didn’t happen. I had to really hunker down and take note of my own deficits and at times, lack of budgeting skills. Then I learned, and re-learned, what I can and can’t do and came up with a viable plan.

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Be Your Own Hero

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Be Your Own Hero

  2. Stay accountable. I don’t mean that as a play on words, but there it is anyway. There are several ways to conquer this. For me, each step working together weaves a stronger fabric that has helped me recover my finances. First, I write things out. In the current climate of instant digital access, it’s so easy for me to glance at my iPhone and think, “Budget’s done!” but let’s be real. That ain’t nothin’ but a scapegoat and an excuse. Once I started really using my Happy Planner Budget, I saw not only where my money should go, but also where it was going. Can someone say, “Ouch!”? It wasn’t pretty, not always. But a good dose of reality helps me stay on track. I also stayed accountable by sharing the dirty details of my situation with my family, and with the creditors. Which brings me to the next item.
  3. Communicate. I know y’all have heard me harp on this like angels in a concert, but honestly. Be honest! If you can’t pay it, say it! When I get to the point of stop pretending everything’s okay, people heard me. I mean, I had a woman pray over my finances with me. And she was a collections agent! Who even does that?! I’m a huge proponent of saying it like it is. This is two-fold: 1. My financial story doesn’t change from month to month when they ask why I still can’t pay the full amount. 2. They’re more willing to work with you when you explain your circumstances.
  4. Evaluate. Now, I know a lot of credit recovery education suggests different ways of paying this bill first, or roll the savings into that one. I’m not gonna tell you how to pay off your bills. It’s personal! I understand the value of paying the smallest bill first and getting it out of the way. But I also see knocking out the high interest. I had to sit down and really go through the papers (and phone calls) to figure out the best option for me. You can, too! Yes, you really can! It takes a little brain power, a little solitude. But you can conquer your budget!
  5. Accept the reality. Yeah, I know. I already said this. Well, think of this as your muffaletta sandwich, okay? The bread is the same but you have a top and a bottom. The other tips are the ohmygosh filling. This slice of bread is the foundation. It may get a little soggy, but it’s still holding the food together, right? So here’s the important thing to remember. Are you listening? This one took me forever to realize, but here it is:
You’re not perfect. Your budget doesn’t have to be. Your credit doesn’t have to be.
I’ve had to watch as my credit tanked, but I’ve also enjoyed seeing it climb back up. It’s a long road and sometimes the roller coaster is out of my control. But I’m still riding it, and it ain’t over yet.

Whatever your credit situation, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. That radio ad and television spot for a quick fix? Don’t do it. It’s not aimed at you. You’re smarter than that. It may be a long, difficult road, and it may never lead to a mansion and fancy cars. But trust me, it’s worth it. There’s a personal satisfaction of putting effort into doing what you can do. And if it doesn’t turn out the way you hope, at least you tried. I’m proud of you for that!

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Be Your Own Hero

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Be Your Own Hero

You can be your own hero. You can find a way. It may not be the way you want, and it may not be easy. But at least it’s yours.

What are some ways you work toward better credit?

Five Things Friday: What About Water?

by Molly Jo Realy @RealMojo68

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

I know. You’re thinking, “Water? Seriously?”

But, yes. Seriously. I’m sitting here wondering what to write for 5TF, and drinking my fruit-infused water, and it hit me. The idea, not the water. Oh, that would be bad, especially since that would prob’ly mean water on Blue Raven. Yikes. Oh, sorry. I digress. What were we talking about? Right. Water.

Frankly, My Dear . . . Berry Infused Water

Frankly, My Dear . . . Berry Infused Water

Forget the fact that without water there would be no coffee or sweet tea. It’s good for so many other things, too!

Don’t believe me? Read on . . . But first, watch this short video of Nippers at his favorite fountain.

  1. Fountains are refreshing. There’s something blissful about a gentle water flow. It carries away the world and leaves you feeling refreshed. There’s a rhythm without a steady rhythm. It can be hypnotic or energizing. Fountains are just fun.

  2. Infused water is delicious. Call it flavored or Spa Water. Whatever floats your boat. [See what I did there?] Adding fruits, berries, herbs, flowers, or drops of essential oils to your water not only tastes fabulous, it’s fabulous for your body! Cucumber and mint. Lemon and orange. Lavender and citrus. Try your blending your own favorite flavors.

  3. Speaking of floating your boat (Aww, I did it again!), waterways are amazing. We’re talking oceans, rivers, lakes, seas, streams. All of it! Nature’s infrastructure provides irrigation and allows for travel where there otherwise wouldn’t be. And the power behind such a natural force is, well, it leaves me speechless.

  4. Cleansing. Whether cleaning your house or flushing out your body, water is one of those pretty important tools. Let’s face it. Y’all aren’t only dry-dusting are you? That doesn’t do anything but move the mess around. Water helps remove dirt, toxins, and leaves your home, and your body, in a better condition. Am I right? How great do you feel after a gulp of ice-cold water on a crazy hot day? And how accomplished when the house is wiped down with water and Pine-Sol? Yeah, me too.

  5. It’s just pretty to look at. Now, maybe I’ve been in the desert too long, and maybe some of all y’all have a different perspective. But out here, rainstorms are few and far between, and when they do arrive they don’t last that long. So we like to take time to enjoy them like welcoming a long-lost friend.

I’m sure I could go on, but I’d like to hear from you: What’s your favorite use for water?

Five Things Friday: Feeling Good

by Molly Jo Realy @RealMojo68

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

Frankly, My Dear . . . : Five Things Friday

I don’t know ’bout you, but it seems the more I take care of things, the more things there are to take care of. Am I right? I’m constantly on the go. Having so much on my plate to take care of, I sometimes forget to take care of the plate holder [that would be me].

Now, eating right and getting enough sleep is not just something your mother or doctor tell you. Get this: It actually works. But sometimes it’s not enough. Sometimes we need a little extra boost, and emotional empowering to get us through the day, yah?

Some days you gotta forget the rules the world tries to impose on you. A little self-love focus can set things right.

Here are five simple ways I tell myself I’m worth it:

  1. Friends and family. I know, I know. Everyone has friends. But when I’m super busy and forget to check in for a few days, I get cranky. Making time to chat with my girls or text my daughter really can boost my spirits. A three-second “Busy day but want you to know I’m thinking of you” is one of greatest messages I can send, or receive. It honors the recipient by demonstrating no matter what’s going on, they’re important. So, in case I forgot to tell you today, YOU’RE IMPORTANT!
    Frankly, My Dear . . . : New FRIENDS

    Frankly, My Dear . . . : New FRIENDS

  2. Five more minutes. There are things we do daily that can be enhanced and lift our mood. Use scented body wash instead of soap. Heat soup on the stove top instead of in a microwave. Listen to music while cleaning house. Take a breath between coffee sips. Sprinkle essential oils on your pillow before bedtime. A little more attention to the how of doing things can make a big difference in getting them done, and feeling better when they are.
  3. Schedule “ME” time. It’s never selfish to take care of yourself. Have a date with yourself: Make your favorite foods, pop in your favorite movie, read a new good. Dance in the living room. Go for a walk. Do the things you want someone else to do for you. If you’re worth it from them, you’re worth it from you!
  4. Sing out loud, loudly. At home, in the car, and yes, in public (although not always). Singing can be aerobic. It can be a prayer. You don’t even have to have a song. Just la-la-la your way through the day and see if you don’t feel better.
    Frankly, Meow Dear . . . : I just gotta sing!

    Frankly, Meow Dear . . . : I just gotta sing!

  5. Indulge the inner child. Oh, I don’t care what y’all think. I still color and play games. You know why? They’re fun. Who says growing up means growing dull? Nuh-uh. Not in this household. I eat ice cream on a stick. I slurp through a straw. I do logic puzzles and play MTG. And, yes. I color outside the lines.
