What’s the Word? Wednesday [Blog Hop]: July 25, 2012

I had Jury Duty today. At least, I was summoned. I tried to talk my way out of it but because I had inadvertently failed to show up last month, I was definitely on the books for this month with a “Failure to Appear” notice. By the time the groups were selected, I was actually looking forward to it.

I’ve sort of always wanted to serve on a jury. Maybe I watched too much “Law & Order” in the past. Maybe I’ve read too many detective books. I’m the kind of person that likes to get behind the scenes and really figure things out. I watch Director’s commentaries every chance I get. I like seeing what makes things tick. I’d love to be a part of the discovery process during a trial… as long as the trial was something like a traffic accident or simple robbery. I can’t stomach anything where people get hurt or maimed. Especially children.

During the waiting period, I struck up a conversation with a nice woman. We discovered we had a lot in common and exchanged contact information. And then my group was dismissed: The parties settled just before jury selection started.

I was at once relieved and disappointed. I’ve recently set up a routine at home. I’ve gotten into the swing of cleaning, cooking, writing, and weeding. I have a pattern. Jury would have convoluted that fine calendaring. And yet… being on a jury would have been a remarkable experience.

Ah, well. I’ll just have to wait another year until they call me back.

In the meantime, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about justice and the horrific crimes being reported from around the world. And I have a lot to say about it all. So stay tuned. Because Frankly, My Dear…

I DO GIVE A DAMN!

“What’s the Word?” Wednesday [Blog Hop]: July 18, 2012

It’s already Wednesday.

Wait. What?

It’s already Wednesday?!

This week has gone by far too fast for me. Dot’s now enrolled in college. College! I’ve got ten resumes out for review, and I’m considering signing up with LinkedIn.com and Kickstarter.com. [If any of you have advice regarding either of those sites, please… I’m all ears!] We had our second class of cake decorating, and Dot’s creation garnered her incredible attentions. I don’t often put photos up on my Facebook page unless they’re linked to posts. But Monday night I posted her cake, as well as wrote about it yesterday. I don’t have tons of followers on Facebook, but I was really impressed to see that Dot’s Cake is my most popular photo to date. Way to go, Kid! I’m one proud Momma!

Last week’s “What’s the Word?” Wednesday Blog Hop was my most popular to date. I love seeing the diversity of writings offered up around the Blogosphere. Would you like to be a part of it?

Pour Your Heart Out – Link Up

You really should read some of the stories over at Shell’s link up. This was only the second time I linked up. I added this morning’s post, “What’s the Word?” Wednesdays: Blog Hop because her topic and mine are similar. But she has a way of writing that inspires me. It’s so heartfelt, so honest. Like she’s opening the doors to her house and allowing us to snoop in her medicine cabinet.

I want to be that transparent. But I’m just not. Partly because my family doesn’t really want me writing about them (go figure), but partly because I guess I don’t think my transparency matters. I write more of what I want instead of who I am. Unless it’s fluff.

Not Shell. She really gets it. She doesn’t even know me, doesn’t know how her blog influences me. But I hope she finds out. She really needs to know that she’s not writing into empty space.

I know sometimes it can feel that way. As a blogger, we put our “schtuff” out there, and then edit it for public consumption. There are basic rules, you know. Be nice. Be fair. Don’t be mean or belittling. Don’t over-expose yourself. Keep your guard up. It’s a complicated relationship: that of being a daily public blogger and being a private person.

So anyway. I really admire Shell and her posts. And I think I’m gonna try to be a little more like her.

And Frankly, My Dear… that’s all she wrote!

Reminders

Just in case you missed them, here’s a rundown of recent important posts. Just click on each link for more information:

The Unemployment Cookbook Giveaway

Mojo Book Review and a GIVEAWAY: “Carmen of the Golden Coast”

“Give Us This Day…”: How I learned to feel secure with what I have.

Meal Memo in a Jar: A new way to plan meals for a month.

Inspired by Jenn of “…so this is love…”, I’m thinking up different ideas for a link up: A theme that I can make a blog badge for and have other bloggers share and post their themed stories along with. It’s a great way to see what other bloggers are talking about. I especially love Jenn’s “Kid Quotes Friday”. If you haven’t checked them out, you really should. Each Friday she posts the best Kid Quotes of the week; and she’s a Social Worker, so she’s got lots of great material.

I’m just not sure what my link-up theme should be. Recipes are overdone (no pun intended, but there it is anyway). Maybe weekly writing prompts like favorite family memories. Or just a venue for others to share what’s on their minds. What do you think?

Well, I’m off to the Dollar Movies and dry some fruits, in between reading and writing of course! Have a good day, whatever you’re doing!
